I think we often neglect our values - we don't think much about what we value and why. If we want to examine our life - the choices we make, how we spend our money, etc. - we must first examine our values. Then we can weigh our decisions against those values. This is what it means to deny ourselves and follow Christ. We make the choice that we will strive to follow God's values even (especially) when they are not what we would choose. Then we examine our lives and try to walk in a way that honors God's values - which in turn honors Him. This is not to say we earn our salvation through this process.
